Eighteen years of paying
close attention.

For almost 20 years I rode road bikes somewhat seriously. Not competitively, just consistently. A hundred and fifty kilometres a week, most weeks. It was the discipline that kept everything else in order.

What that kind of sustained physical output does, over time, is make you pay attention to your body in a way most people never have to. You notice things. You develop a reasonably fine-grained model of how your body responds to what you do, and don't, put into it. You stop accepting vague answers.

A few years ago my GP, looking at my bloodwork, suggested I consider statins. Standard protocol: cholesterol numbers outside the reference range, standard recommendation, here's the script. My GP is a family friend of many years. I trust him. But I'd already been researching this territory and my gut said no.

So at my GP's suggestion I got a calcium score, a CT scan that directly measures arterial plaque and gives you a far more precise picture of actual cardiovascular risk than cholesterol numbers alone. And I underwent a full cardiac stress test with a heart specialist.

The specialist looked at everything in front of him and reached his own conclusion. Based on the evidence, statins were of no benefit to me. Going deep enough into a question to change a medical outcome, and having the most qualified person in the room confirm you'd read it correctly, sent me further down a path I'd already started walking.

If the standard answer wasn't right there, what else was worth examining more carefully?

A charge that keeps
your blood moving.

What I found, reading the research in depth, was a body of work around something called zeta potential.

The simplest way to describe it: zeta potential is the electrical charge on the surface of particles suspended in a fluid: in this context, your red blood cells in blood. That charge is what keeps them apart. When it's healthy and maintained, red blood cells repel each other, move freely, and can do their job with maximum surface area: transporting oxygen, disposing of carbon dioxide, the fundamentals of a functioning body.

When that charge degrades, through mineral imbalance, chronic low-grade dehydration and the accumulated load of a modern lifestyle, cells start to clump. Blood viscosity increases. Flow slows, first in the smallest vessels, then progressively larger ones. Every cell in your body gets slightly less of what it needs.

The cumulative effect, over years, looks a lot like what most of us accept as the normal arithmetic of getting older. Less energy, slower recovery, foggier thinking. Running on six cylinders instead of eight.

Most of us have actually felt both ends of this spectrum without ever having a name for it. The sluggish, stagnated feeling that arrives for no obvious reason? That's often the signature of blood that isn't moving as freely as it should. And conversely, most of us have experienced a sudden unexpected clarity: after a swim in the ocean, a walk barefoot on grass, a glass of genuinely clean water after a long flight. That's not coincidence or placebo. That's a brief, partial restoration of zeta potential, and the body noticing it immediately.

The research goes back further than you'd think. A scientist named Thomas Riddick was publishing on this in the 1970s. More recently, a biophysicist at the University of Washington named Gerald Pollack has done serious, peer-reviewed work on the fourth phase of water and its implications at the cellular level. This isn't fringe material. It's simply not the kind of thing that ends up in a GP's waiting room, because there's no pharmaceutical angle, and no one with a marketing budget behind it.

Water that behaves
like a liquid crystal.

Pollack's work on what he calls Exclusion Zone water fills in a piece of this that I found particularly compelling. Under the right conditions (a negatively charged surface plus ambient infrared energy, which the body produces constantly), water doesn't stay as ordinary H₂O. It reorganises into a connected network that behaves like a semi-solid liquid crystal.

This structured water creates much of the body's internal architecture all the way down to the cellular level. It forms frictionless barriers between surfaces, protects cells from external damage, and maintains cellular integrity. It's foundational in ways that conventional hydration science doesn't adequately capture.

Here's what I find most striking about the heart's role in all of this. As blood flows through the chambers in a vortexial pattern and exits through the valves, the heart actively imparts a negative charge onto individual red blood cells. Every beat.

The heart isn't just a pump. It's constantly working to maintain the zeta potential of the blood passing through it. When we undermine that charge through what we eat, drink, and breathe, we're working directly against what the heart is trying to achieve. It's doing its part. The question is whether we're doing ours.

What degrades it

A list that reads like

This is where it gets uncomfortable, because the list of things that actively degrade zeta potential describes most of what surrounds us every day.

The common thread through all of it is ionic imbalance: too many positive charges, not enough negative ones to maintain the electrical environment the body depends on.

The good news is that some of the methods are things many people already do, without understanding why they help.

  • Infrared saunas:

    among the more powerful options. They support liquid crystalline water directly and also discharge positively-ionised sweat.

  • Earthing:

    walking barefoot on grass or soil. Appears to work primarily through altering zeta potential rather than the vaguer 'negative ions' mechanism it's usually attributed to.

  • Epsom salt baths:

    genuinely effective at supporting ionic balance through transdermal absorption.

  • Clean water:

    reverse osmosis or distilled. Tap water's positive ionic charge actively competes with what you're trying to achieve.

  • The oral route:

    which is where Riddick's research becomes directly actionable, and where the idea for Zeta Plus began to take shape.

The formulation

Riddick tested systematically across sodium, potassium, and various salt forms. The result was unambiguous: citrate was the most effective anion for stabilising zeta potential in the human body.

A 1:3 electrolyte that acts as a dispersing agent for the bloodstream. Highly bioavailable. Potassium is one of the body's most essential minerals, responsible for nerve signalling, muscle contraction, and fluid balance.

Potassium Bicarbonate
Alkalising agent · pH buffer

Raises the solution to a pH of 6.0 to 8.4. Riddick was emphatic that maintaining pH above that of blood, 7.4, was critical for the ionic environment to function as intended.

Why liquid format matters:

The liquid format isn't a marketing consideration, it's a functional requirement. The compound has to be adequately diluted to work. This is why capsules and tablets cannot achieve the same outcome. The delivery mechanism is inseparable from the mechanism of action.
